After working 12 years in Corrections, being a part of the Emergency Response Team (ERT), and encounters with some pretty violent and dysregulated individuals, I have come to learn a few things. What is taught in defensive tactics and most martial arts schools lack the practical tools required to stop an attack and move to safety. What you need is simple gross motor movement. Many defensive tactics curricula teach joint manipulations and control holds, which unfortunately, tend to fail during violent encounters. Your human arsenal should consist of palms, fists, elbows, forearms, knees, and low-line kicks. Ideally, we want our movement to be deliberate and decisive; this communicates to our aggressors that we are prepared and willing to go the distance to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Could you bear not having that special person, pet, or thing in your life anymore? If you had the ability to change that scenario, would you take it? If so, then let’s train and make ourselves formidable and capable.
